Global Leadership Summit – Erwin McManus

Erwin McManus

Activist; Filmmaker; Innovator and Cultural Architect
Mosaic
Los Angeles, California

He leads a complex, multi-campus church, yet convention, programs, and structures repel him. Erwin McManus remains unencumbered by the human creations that can crowd out the essence of the Spirit’s work in the world. “Don’t do evangelism,” he says. “Live Christ.” McManus purposefully immerses himself in the culture around him—the fashion and entertainment industry of Los Angeles. It’s been as normative for him to start a clothing line and produce a hit Super Bowl commercial as it has been for him to teach at Mosaic on Sunday mornings. McManus imparts to his listeners a holistic perspective of ministry that compels integration and action—and leaves “doing church” in the dust.

My fave parts of Erwin’s speech…

“We need to become the cultivators of human talent, the stewards of human potential.”

“If we do something beautiful, the world will ask us, what fuels our motivation, what inspires us?” That’s how they see God.

“It’s not that hard to bring people to Jesus when you tell them a story where they see themselves.”

Erwin claimed that Solomon is wrong! Why did he choose to ridicule Solomon to make his points. His message could have been easily delivered without attempting to slight Solomon on the statement that “nothing is new under the sun”. Erwin claimed that God said He is doing new things. Well, is God under the sun? Erwin referred to 2 Corinthians 5:17 that whoever is in Christ is a new creation. True but Erwin needs to understand being in Christ means being born of God and that’s not under the sun either. Yes, God is using people to do new and great things. John 3:27 says, “No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven”. See? All new, good and creative ideas come from heaven. I wished Erwin had chosen to listen to his wife not tell anyone about his belief that Solomon is wrong. Peter warned that many people who don’t understand Paul’s writings misinterpreted the Scripture to their own destruction, (2 Peter 3:16).
