Leadership Summit – Session 1 Bill Hybels

Here’s what Bill shared in session 1:

Leadership’s highest purpose is to advance the kingdom of God.

So much of leadership is making decisions and so many of those decisions have high stakes.

As a leader you need a framework/system/process for making God-honoring decisions.

4 Questions a Christian leader asks when making a decisions:

  1. Does the Bible say anything about this?
  2. What would smart advisors advise me to do?
  3. What have I learned about the pains of past decisions, the gains of past decisions, and my experiences.
  4. Is the Spirit prompting me?

As a leader you can not be decision adverse.  You can not be passive.  You have to take responsibility.

If you make a bad decisions, you don’t blame anyone, you take responsibility.  Taking responsibility for poor decisions keeps the learning quotient high in your life.

Develop axioms that are phrases/proverbs to adhere to as a leader.

Examples of axioms:

“The best way to deal with an enemy is to turn him into a friend.” Abraham Lincoln

“Check your ego at the door.” Colin Powell

Bill’s Axioms:

  • Vision leaks
  • Get the right people around the table
  • Facts are your friends
  • When something feels funky, engage
  • Leaders call fouls
  • This is church

Do you reflect on your leadership enough to compose your own axioms?

**********************************************

Already a lot to absorb today.

I’ve been thinking about whether I have any axioms.  There is one that comes to mind – “Good Problems”

I’ll be thinking about whether I have more.

How about you, do you have some axioms you’ve developed as a leader?

@duncanmcf – vision leaks is Bill’s axiom to remind us as leaders that we have to constantly be reminding people of the vision because for some reason they forget, lose focus, get off track

My axiom: “The key to life is not balance, it is obedience.”

Found your website looking for someone blogging from the Willow Creek Leadership Summit. Just thought I throw in my 2 cents.
